If you keep your mouth shut, you will stay out of trouble. (Prov 21:23 NLT)
Prayer: LORD, my mouth – quick, harsh, emotional words – has often
gotten me into trouble! When I have opportunity to respond in anger
or say something hurtful, help me hold my tongue and turn my heart
to You. If I speak out of my emotions, I will likely make matters
worse. If I say anything, let it be something that will help resolve
conflict and bring peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on
us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said:
‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy
Spirit.’ So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who
believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could
oppose God?” (Acts 11:15-17 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, opposing You is unthinkable, yet, we do it so often in
so many ways. When I discount something You do in someone because it
is not what I think or how I think it should be, I am opposing You.
Forgive me! Help me put away my assumptions about You and get to
know You. I want to better recognize You when You speak, act, or do
something in someone I am not familiar with. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. “Tonight
all of you will desert me,” Jesus told them. “For the Scriptures
say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will
be scattered.’ (Mat 26:30-31 NLT)
Prayer: LORD, I am sure it was not comforting to the twelve to be
told, “You will fail…”. I do not want to excuse failure, but I
know I may begin to condemn myself if I do. Give me courage to
pursue You with the confidence that You never stop loving me and You
do not condemn me, even when I fail. Thank You that Your arms are
always open to embrace me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope
to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. (1 Cor 16:7 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, in my relationship with You, I have too many drop in
visits and too few where I spend quality time with You. I open the
door, say “Hi.”, then move on, or worse, wave to You as I hurriedly
pass by. I want my relationship with You to be real, dynamic, and
the top priority in my life. Help me do what I need to do to make it
so. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those
who trust in him, (Nahum 1:7 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, when days are dark, circumstances difficult, and I see
no way out of the troubles I face, give me courage to look beyond my
circumstances to You. You are a refuge in bad times and a place of
peace to enjoy good times. Thank You for being all that and for
caring for me in all the circumstances of my life. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about
all these charges we are bringing against him.” (Acts 24:8 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, when I hear an accusation, help me be mindful to
examine the matter myself to learn the facts before I make a
judgment based on hearsay. Wisdom is to carefully consider what I
hear and not just accept something said without accountability. In
Jesus’ name, Amen.
When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm
continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. After
the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them
and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from
Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.
But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you
will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. So keep up your
courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he
told me. (Acts 27:20-22,25 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, help me have courage in overwhelming circumstances.
Give me strength to trust that Your promises will not fail, no
matter what storms of life may rage around me. You are faithful to
do all that You have promised, storms notwithstanding. In Jesus’
name, Amen.
The godly people have all disappeared; not one fair-minded person is
left on the earth. They are all murderers, even setting traps for
their own brothers. They go about their evil deeds with both hands.
How skilled they are at using them! Officials and judges alike
demand bribes. The people with money and influence pay them off, and
together they scheme to twist justice. (Micah 7:2-3 NLT)
Prayer: LORD, sometimes the news in the world is so bad that it
seems there are no good people left. When I cannot see any way to
avoid the violence, corruption, and dishonesty around me, help me
remember that my well being depends on You. Give me courage to trust
in You, regardless of what happens or what anyone else does. In
Jesus’ name, Amen.
You showed favor to your land, O LORD; you restored the fortunes of
Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all
their sins. You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce
anger. Restore us again, O God our Savior, and put away your
displeasure toward us. (Psa 85:1-4 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, I cannot undo what I have done in the past, but I can
determine what I will do in the future. I am grateful that You do
not hold my past against me. Help me not hold it against myself.
Give me courage to look forward with You and keep the past behind me
where it belongs. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have died. I cried out,
“I’m slipping!” and your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. When
doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
(Psa 94:17-19)
LORD, there have been times when I felt hopeless and without
the prospect of joy ever being in my life again. But You brought me
through it and gave me hope. And in any situation that arises in the
future, You will again be my hope. I now know I can come through any
difficulty with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
